A severe case of pneumopathy in a duck breeder due to Chlamydia psittaci diagnosed by 16S rDNA sequencing

چکیده

Résumé en anglais Introduction: Psittacosis is a zoonotic infectious disease contracted from birds and caused by Chlamydia psittaci, an obligate intracellular pathogen. In humans, the symptoms of the disease range from inapparent illness to systemic illness with severe pneumonia. Case presentation: A severe case of atypical pneumonia requiring extra‐corporeal membrane oxygenation in a duck breeder is described. Because of the critical urgency of the case described here, and without any clear identification of the pathogen during the first days of hospitalization, treatment had to be adjusted daily. While conventional clinical methods failed to identify the causative agent, C. psittaci was finally identified using broad‐range 16S rDNA PCR analysis performed on a sample of broncho‐alveolar fluid. Conclusion: Owing to the non‐specific clinical signs of psittacosis, early identification of cases of the disease remains a challenge. C. psittaci should be sought in patients presenting severe acute respiratory distress syndrome without any evidence of other infectious causes and especially when exposure to birds or bird products is reported. PCR is a very useful method to help identify fastidious organisms of this kind. Isolation and characterization of Brachyspira species based on biochemical scheme and 16S rDNA partial sequencing

Avian intestinal spirochetosis (AIS) is a disease of birdscharacterized by a marked colonization of the cecum and/or rectumwith anaerobic intestinal bacteria of the genus Brachyspira. Thepurpose of the study was to determine the occurrence of Brachyspiraspp from avian sources in Iran and to characterize selected isolates bybiochemical and molecular methods. Out of 165 fecal samples obtained fro...

The Comparison of Biochemical and Sequencing 16S rDNA Gene Methods to Identify Nontuberculous Mycobacteria

The identification of Mycobacteria in the species level has great medical importance. Biochemical tests are laborious and time-consuming, so new techniques could be used to identify the species. This research aimed to the comparison of biochemical and sequencing 16S rDNA gene methods to identify nontuberculous Mycobacteria in patients suspected to tuberculosis in Golestan province which is the ...

Phylogenetic analyses of Chlamydia psittaci strains from birds based on 16S rRNA gene sequence.

The nucleotide sequences of 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were determined for 39 strains of Chlamydia psittaci (34 from birds and 5 from mammals) and for 4 Chlamydia pecorum strains. The sequences were compared phylogenetically with the gene sequences of nine Chlamydia strains (covering four species of the genus) retrieved from nucleotide databases. In the neighbor-joining tree, C. psittaci strains ...

Molecular Identification of Vibrio harveyi From Larval Stage of Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) Boone (Crustacea:Decapoda)By Polymerase Chain Reaction and 16S rDNA Sequencing

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile and halophilic bacterium identified as Vibrio harveyi was isolated from hatchery-reared larval of Iran Shrimp Research Centerfollowing mass mortality . Seven isolates of Vibrio spp.were collected from nauplii of Litopenaeus vannamei and then were evaluated for characteristics including morphology, physiology and biochemistry. The results indicated that the is...

Pathogenicity of low and highly virulent Chlamydia psittaci isolates for specific-pathogen-free chickens.

In commercially raised poultry, chlamydiosis mostly seems to occur on turkey or duck farms, sometimes associated with zoonotic transmission and disease (psittacosis) in humans. However, Chlamydia infections are apparently emerging in chickens, and information on the virulence of Chlamydia in chickens is limited. Up-to-date Chlamydia psittaci genotypes B and D are most frequently found in broile...
